The Centennial connection

The 1876 Centennial Exposition helped create a mass public language of patriotic memory. Willard’s “Spirit of ’76” became part of that memory and was reproduced widely.

For this site, 1876 is important because it shows how Americans commemorated 1776 one hundred years later — not just what happened in the Revolution itself.
